Home Remodeling & Repair - What You Should Know!

Many homeowner choose to invest in their home by remodeling or repairing the existing structure. Some have their mind set on just one room, while others have ideas of completely changing the appearance of their home inside and out. Home remodeling repair has taken on a trend, and you'll notice that many families are increasing the values of their homes through renovations.

Some folks take on remodeling or repair projects on their own, but for most, a contractor is hired to do the work. There are a lot reliable contractors, and many of them have websites that explain in detail what services they offer. You might also ask family or friends who recently had a renovation project completed. Most of the time, if they are happy with the work, they will gladly recommend their contractor to you.

When you've decided on a couple of contractors that you feel are competent, ask them to come to your home to give you a quote for the work you wish to have done.

Along with the quote ask:

°How long they've been in business?
°What licenses and certifications do they have?
°Can they show you some of the remodeling and repair work they've done
°Can they provide you with references?
°How long will it take to complete the project?
°Do they offer a warranty on their work?
°Ask for a complete itemized summary of the work that will be done and how much it will cost.

If your plans include major remodeling and repairs, discuss ways you can save money with the contractor you've chosen. For example, if you plan on replacing the furnace, obviously you will want to go with a good one. If you are changing all the fixtures in your bathroom or adding new appliances to your remodeled kitchen, you might be able to shop around for less expensive brands.

Keep in mind that these days it's all about making your home as energy efficient as possible. If you are replacing windows, plumbing, heating and cooling systems, electrical units and insulation, make sure you go with energy efficient products, because they will save you money in the end.

Some home remodeling repair involves adding an additional floor or room. Before you add any additional space, make sure you discuss the design of your home with your contractor to know what additions or rooms will look best.

Obviously, you would not want to add a second story to a ranch style home. Perhaps an additional room in the back of the house would be most suitable. On the other hand, if you own a small Cape, adding a dormer as a second floor would look stunning and greatly increase the value of your home.

If your plans include selling your home once its been remodeled and repaired, you might want to stick with a clean, basic remodeling job. Additions like an extra recreational room, sun porch, kid's room or remodeled basement are all big pluses that those looking to purchase a home love to see.
